Trump states US to leave if Ukraine discussions become ‘very difficult’

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has stated that Washington may withdraw from efforts to negotiate a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict if both Moscow and Kiev refuse to engage in meaningful talks. However, he emphasized that the US still hopes to see an end to the fighting.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump responded to comments made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who suggested that the White House could step back from peace talks if progress is not made. Trump added that if either side makes negotiations impossible, the US would label them "foolish" and "horrible" and decide to move on, though he expressed hope that this scenario would not arise.

Earlier, Rubio had indicated that the US is still assessing whether a peace deal is "doable," stating that a decision needs to be made within days. Rubio did not offer specifics on the negotiations but described them as part of a “broad framework.” Trump agreed with Rubio’s sentiment, expressing confidence that there is a good chance to resolve the issue.

Trump has consistently called for a swift peaceful resolution to the conflict. Since taking office, the US and Russia have held multiple high-level talks, despite continued calls from Ukraine and its Western allies for escalation. Moscow has stated its willingness to negotiate, provided that its key security concerns, including NATO's presence in Ukraine and recognition of new borders, are addressed. However, Russia has rejected the idea of freezing the conflict, warning that such a move would only lead to future hostilities, citing Ukraine's violations of a US-brokered ceasefire agreement.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov acknowledged that while the peace talks are challenging, Russia remains committed to finding a resolution, with some progress made despite the many complex issues still under discussion.
