FBI brands explosion near fertility clinic as ‘terrorism’

(MENAFN) A deadly explosion outside a fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California, has been classified by the FBI as an act of terrorism. The blast, which occurred late Saturday morning, killed the suspected perpetrator and injured four others.

The incident took place outside the American Reproductive Centers clinic, which provides fertility services such as IVF and egg freezing. According to the Los Angeles Times, the explosion caused major damage to the single-story building and surrounding structures, with debris spread over a 250-yard radius and windows shattered up to five blocks away.

Authorities believe the explosion originated from a vehicle parked outside the clinic. Photos and video footage from the scene revealed significant structural damage, including a collapsed roof and a burned-out car. The impact of the blast was reportedly felt more than two miles away.

Akil Davis, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles office, confirmed the incident is being treated as a deliberate terrorist act. An internal LAPD briefing identified the deceased individual as the suspected attacker. Firearms, including an AK-47 and an AR-style rifle, along with ammunition, were found near the destroyed vehicle.

Fortunately, the clinic was closed for the weekend, and no patients were inside at the time. Dr. Maher Abdallah, who leads the facility, told CBS News that while a couple of buildings were damaged, no staff members were hurt and the IVF lab, including stored embryos, remained secure.

The FBI identified the suspect as 25-year-old Guy Edward Bartkus. Investigators say he left behind written and recorded materials describing himself as a “pro-mortalist”—someone who believes in ending their own life to avoid future suffering and to prevent potential harm to others.

Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills emphasized that the attack appears to be an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. Authorities continue to investigate the motive, but no additional suspects are being sought.
