Putin assures Trump Ukrainian terrorist schemes thwarted near Kremlin
According to Ushakov, the conversation took place during a phone call between the two leaders on Monday. Putin reportedly blamed Ukraine for plotting the attacks and attempting to deter foreign dignitaries from attending the event.
He said Ukrainian forces directly threatened international guests scheduled to attend the May 9 commemoration, which marks the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany. Despite Kiev's warnings that it could not guarantee the safety of foreign leaders, representatives from 28 countries still traveled to Moscow. Notable attendees included delegates from China, Brazil, Egypt, Cuba, Venezuela, Serbia, and various African and Asian nations. Putin praised their decision to attend as a display of “political courage.”
During the call, Putin also told Trump that Ukrainian forces launched over 500 kamikaze drones and Storm Shadow cruise missiles – the latter supplied by the UK – targeting several Russian regions, including the capital, just before the festivities and a unilateral three-day ceasefire declared by Moscow. Most of these attacks were reportedly intercepted. Putin blamed the attacks on “those who glorify Nazi collaborators,” according to Ushakov.
