GOP Senators Block Legislation on Trump’s Qatar Jet Deal

(MENAFN) Republican members of the U.S. Senate on Wednesday halted a legislative proposal put forward by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, which aimed to challenge a recent agreement involving Leader Donald Trump and the Qatari government.

The deal involves Trump receiving a luxury aircraft, intended to be used as the future Air Force One.

Schumer took to social media platform X to voice his concerns, stating, "With the news that Trump formally accepted the Qatari jet: I took to the Senate floor to pass my bill to block DoD from spending a single penny on a foreign Air Force One."

He emphasized the severity of the issue, asserting, "It’s a bribe. It’s a national security threat. But Republicans stood with Trump and blocked my bill."

The measure, known as the Presidential Airlift Security Act, was obstructed by Senator Roger Marshall.

The proposed law would have forbidden the Department of Defense from allocating any money toward the acquisition, alteration, refurbishment, or upkeep of any aircraft previously owned by a foreign state or its emissaries, for the purpose of presidential transportation.

This legislative move followed Trump’s announcement during a recent trip to the Middle East, in which he revealed his intention to accept a Boeing 747-8 from Qatar to serve as the next presidential aircraft.

On Wednesday, the Department of Defense confirmed the acceptance of the aircraft.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated, "The secretary of defense has accepted a Boeing 747 from Qatar in accordance with all federal rules and regulations."

He further assured that the Department would take steps to ensure all necessary safety protocols and mission-readiness standards are met for any aircraft designated to carry the U.S. president.
