US, Philippine Coast Guards Conduct First Joint Drill
This event marked a significant development in the cooperative relationship between the two nations' maritime forces.
Described as a "milestone in maritime collaboration," the activity represented the debut of both coast guards participating together in a Maritime Cooperative Activity.
The announcement, shared on X, emphasized that the event demonstrates a broader, more integrated national effort toward maritime collaboration.
This exercise, identified as the 6th Bilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity, took place on Tuesday in the strategically important waters surrounding Palawan and Occidental Mindoro.
These locations hold considerable geopolitical relevance, making the exercise all the more noteworthy.
AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo S. Brawner Jr. highlighted the significance of the joint drill, stating that "as the Philippines continues to navigate evolving maritime challenges," these collaborative efforts reflect the AFP's determination to upgrade its defense capacities and enhance military alliances aimed at safeguarding both national and regional maritime stakes.
The drill also underscores the longstanding defense ties between the Philippines and the United States.
Under a mutual defense agreement, the Philippines remains the US’s oldest security partner in the Asia-Pacific, a region where US troops maintain access to Philippine military facilities.
