Kremlin announces delegation for Ukraine discussions
In addition to the main negotiators, Putin named a group of experts to support the talks, consisting of high-ranking military, diplomatic, and civil officials.
On the Ukrainian side, media reports suggest that President Vladimir Zelensky will travel to Istanbul accompanied by senior officials including his chief of staff Andrey Yermak, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga. However, the final composition of Ukraine’s delegation is expected to be decided by Zelensky upon arrival.
Putin’s proposal to resume direct talks with Ukraine, made earlier in the week, emphasized the need for negotiations to establish a lasting truce and resolve the underlying causes of the conflict. While Ukraine and its allies initially responded cautiously, they insisted that talks should follow a 30-day ceasefire. After receiving support from former U.S. President Donald Trump, Zelensky signaled willingness to engage in person with Putin in Istanbul.
Despite this progress, the announcement of Medinsky as Russia’s lead negotiator drew criticism from Zelensky’s adviser Mikhail Podoliak, who questioned his suitability to handle what he called “fundamental issues.” Podoliak dismissed the idea of a presidential meeting under such terms, citing concerns about the format and Medinsky’s status.
