Western Nations Progress Lifting Syria Sanctions

(MENAFN) Western nations, including the United States and members of the European Union, are progressing toward relaxing the punitive measures previously placed on Syria.

This shift follows the collapse of the Assad government and aligns with the country’s ongoing political restructuring.

The establishment of a fresh governing body in Syria is being seen as a significant moment to eliminate the sanctions once enforced on the former Ba’athist administration.

This development is considered vital to facilitating the nation’s rebuilding and future development.

Statements from both the US and the EU about easing these restrictions are viewed as pivotal for reviving Syria’s economy.

These declarations have signaled a new chapter in Syria’s path toward stabilization and economic rejuvenation.

The European Union made this decision during a gathering of foreign ministers held on Tuesday in Brussels. Kaja Kallas, who serves as the EU’s chief diplomat, stated that the bloc opted to end sanctions on Syria to support its reconstruction efforts.

As part of the updated framework, EU member countries will be permitted to allocate resources for collaboration with Syrian officials in charge of defense and internal affairs.

This cooperation will focus on rebuilding infrastructure, enhancing institutional capabilities, countering terrorism, and managing migration.

Moreover, restrictions targeting Syria’s central financial authority are anticipated to be rescinded.

Earlier progress came in February, when the EU took initial steps during a Brussels meeting.

At that time, ministers agreed to halt sanctions related to Syria’s banking, energy, and transport sectors.

They also removed several institutions — including the Industrial Bank, Popular Credit Bank, Saving Bank, and Syrian Arab Airlines — from the list of penalized entities.

Additionally, the EU allowed certain exceptions to the restrictions on financial transactions between European and Syrian banks.

These exemptions permit operations in the energy and transport sectors and facilitate funding for humanitarian assistance and reconstruction initiatives.
