Canada Considers Participating in U.S. “Golden Dome” Defense Initiative
Following a two-day Cabinet meeting in Ottawa, Carney acknowledged that Canada is evaluating the potential for involvement, though he did not disclose any details about possible financial contributions.
“We are conscious that we have an ability, if we so choose, to complete the Golden Dome with investments and partnership,” he said, framing the decision as a strategic military matter to be assessed “accordingly.”
The announcement followed Trump’s recent claim that Canada had proactively expressed interest in the U.S.-led missile shield and that his administration would ensure Ottawa contributes its “fair share.”
Carney confirmed he had spoken directly with Trump about the initiative and noted that military officials from both countries have been discussing missile defense cooperation for several years.
Calling enhanced military defense a “good idea,” Carney cited potential dangers posed by North Korea, Russia, China, and “even outer space in a not-too-distant future.”
Although Carney has previously criticized Trump—accusing him of attempting to “break” Canada—he acknowledged the need for practical collaboration.
“We are in a position now where we cooperate when necessary, but not necessarily cooperate,” he remarked.
