Poll indicates majority of Germans would like to leave nation

(MENAFN)
A new YouGov survey reported by Die Welt reveals that a majority of Germans are open to the idea of leaving the country, with many citing economic struggles and rising migration as key factors driving their desire to emigrate.

According to the poll, 31% of respondents said they would “definitely” move abroad if they had no restrictions related to work, family, or finances. Another 27% indicated they would “probably” consider it. Conversely, 22% said they “probably wouldn’t,” and 15% said they would “definitely not” leave.

Among those open to relocation, 36% said they had been thinking about emigrating more often in recent months. Within this group, 61% pointed to Germany’s immigration situation as a major reason, while 41% blamed the ongoing economic recession. Political factors also played a role: 29% cited the rise of the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, and 22% mentioned security concerns related to Russia.

Twelve percent expressed worries about a potential weakening of U.S. support for Europe under a possible second Trump presidency, and 36% cited various other personal or societal reasons.

When it came to preferred destinations, German-speaking countries were the top choices, with Switzerland leading at 30%, followed by Austria at 23%. Spain (22%) and Canada (17%) were also popular.

Germany has faced economic stagnation, remaining the only G7 country with zero growth over the past two years. The International Monetary Fund forecasts minimal growth of just 0.1% for 2025, keeping Germany behind its peers.

Despite the downturn, Germany continues to attract asylum seekers, receiving over 237,000 applications in 2024 — more than a quarter of the EU total. In response, Berlin has recently reinstated strict border controls, moving away from the open-border stance introduced by former Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2015.
