Denmark, EU Express Readiness to Defend Trade Interests

(MENAFN) Denmark has expressed its readiness to safeguard its economic priorities if tensions escalate into a trade conflict with the United States. On Friday, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated that the country, along with the European Union, is prepared to respond if necessary.

Based on a national broadcaster, Rasmussen affirmed, "Denmark and the rest of the EU are ready to defend their interests in a possible trade war with the US."

Nonetheless, he also stressed the importance of diplomacy, noting, "The EU wants, first and foremost, to pursue dialogue and negotiate a solution."

Rasmussen reiterated the EU's commitment to finding a peaceful resolution through discussion, but he also emphasized that the bloc is willing to take decisive and measured actions to safeguard its economic position if talks fail.

This stance highlights the EU's dual approach of negotiation paired with readiness to retaliate, should relations deteriorate further.

The minister’s comments were a direct reaction to recent statements by United States Leader Donald Trump.

Trump declared that current tariff talks with the EU "are going nowhere" and threatened to impose a 50 percent tariff on European goods starting June 1.

His remarks were delivered via social media, where he accused the EU of forming with the intent to exploit the United States in trade matters.

Trump criticized what he called the EU’s “powerful trade barriers,” including value-added taxes, excessive penalties on corporations, non-tariff restrictions, currency manipulation, and what he described as “unfair and unjustified lawsuits against American companies.”

He claimed these factors contributed to an annual trade imbalance of over USD250 billion, which he deemed “totally unacceptable.”

Earlier in April, the European Union was hit with a 20 percent tariff.

Although President Trump later lifted these duties for all countries except China, those levies on China were also temporarily halted following negotiations in Geneva earlier this month.
