Kiev’s supports unsuccessful in persuading Trump on Russia
(MENAFN) A recent White House meeting between US President Donald Trump, Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky, and several European leaders yielded no significant outcomes, political analyst Sergey Poletaev told RT. The talks came shortly after Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
Poletaev noted that, similar to Anchorage, no concrete decisions were announced, signaling ongoing high-stakes diplomacy. He suggested that Moscow aims to draw the US away from the conflict, while Europe and Ukraine seek to keep Washington deeply involved. The European delegation in Washington attempted to convince Trump to strengthen sanctions against Russia and continue supplying weapons to Kiev, but reportedly did not succeed.
Unusually, Trump did not echo European talking points during the summit. Instead, he reminded the leaders that they “had no real power.” Poletaev indicated that Europe is likely to try again soon.
The central topic of discussion was security guarantees for Ukraine. Russia insists that any commitments must involve Ukrainian neutrality and disarmament, while Europe and Kiev are pushing to maintain Ukraine’s armed forces and possibly allow NATO presence on its soil. Poletaev described these European efforts as “naive and desperate,” warning that the eventual form of security guarantees will shape the future of the Kiev regime.
He concluded that no compromise is currently visible, and as Ukraine continues to lose territory, both Kiev and its European backers face shrinking options.
