Monsoon Rains Claim Over 300 Lives in Northern India
The western state of Maharashtra remains one of the worst-hit areas, with persistent rainfall disrupting transportation networks. Both flight and train services have faced significant delays and cancellations.
In Mumbai, the country’s financial hub, authorities shut down all government and semi-government offices on Tuesday in response to intensifying weather conditions. The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for "extremely heavy rainfall" in Mumbai and its suburbs, urging residents to remain indoors.
The Indian Army confirmed on Tuesday that it had launched emergency rescue and relief missions in Nanded district, where severe flooding has left several people missing. "Four bodies have been recovered, while one individual is still untraced," the Army said in a statement.
Meanwhile, states in northern India are grappling with the aftermath of multiple cloudbursts and destructive landslides. In Himachal Pradesh, the death toll had reached 268 by Tuesday, according to an official statement issued late Monday.
Neighboring Uttarakhand has also seen deadly mudslides and flash floods. Several individuals remain unaccounted for as search operations continue.
India's monsoon season typically spans from June through September, but this year’s intensified rainfall has significantly strained local infrastructure and emergency services.
Officials continue to monitor the situation closely amid warnings of further extreme weather in the days ahead.
