Kenya boosts efforts to safeguard Lake Turkana

(MENAFN) The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has launched a new patrol boat at Sibiloi National Park to enhance protection of Lake Turkana in the country’s northwest.

Erustus Kanga, KWS director general, told reporters in Nairobi that the vessel, donated by partner organizations, is equipped with advanced sonar and radar systems.

"The boat will play a critical role in strengthening surveillance, deterring illegal activities, protecting fisheries, and ensuring the safety of both wildlife and communities whose livelihoods depend on the lake's fragile ecosystem," Kanga said.

He noted that the patrol boat will improve safety for KWS rangers and enable timely monitoring of Lake Turkana. Beyond security, the vessel is expected to boost tourism in northern Kenya by providing safer access to the lake and the national park.

Mekuria Argaw, executive director of the Horn of Africa Regional Environmental Center and Network, highlighted the importance of safeguarding both the lake and the park, noting their ecological connection to wildlife areas in neighboring Ethiopia.
