Russia starts its heaviest attack on Ukraine

(MENAFN) Ukraine reported that Russia carried out one of its most intense bombardments in recent weeks, unleashing 574 drones and 40 missiles across the country.

According to officials, one person was killed in the western city of Lviv, while 15 others were injured during attacks in the Transcarpathia region in the southwest.

The wave of strikes coincided with ongoing diplomatic initiatives led by US President Donald Trump aimed at securing a halt to the conflict. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the attacks underscored why efforts to resolve the war were "so critical."

President Volodymyr Zelensky reaffirmed Ukraine’s readiness to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin “in neutral Europe” and suggested Switzerland or Austria as possible venues. He also noted he would not object to Istanbul, while dismissing Budapest as a host city, saying it “is not easy today.”

Zelensky reiterated his openness to dialogue with Putin in “any format,” though the framework for talks remains uncertain.

The possibility of direct negotiations gained traction after Trump met Putin in Alaska, followed by a White House gathering with Zelensky and several European leaders earlier this week. Initially, Trump floated the idea of trilateral talks with both leaders but later adjusted his stance, saying: "Now I think it would be better if they met without me... If necessary, I'll go."

Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia fired a total of 614 drones and missiles overnight into Thursday, of which 577 were intercepted. It marked the most extensive air assault since July, striking not only eastern areas near the front but also western regions that had previously been less frequently targeted.
