Maduro Criticizes US Naval Deployment Near Venezuela

(MENAFN) Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has strongly criticized the arrival of three U.S. warships positioned near the Venezuelan shoreline, labeling the action as an “illegal” strategy aimed at toppling his administration.

"What they're threatening to do against Venezuela — government change, a military terrorist attack — is immoral, criminal and illegal," Maduro stated while addressing legislators on Friday.

As per various sources, the U.S. Navy recently deployed three Aegis-class guided missile destroyers to international waters off the coast of Venezuela.

Additionally, American media indicated that up to 4,000 U.S. marines could potentially be sent to the region.

Maduro framed the development as a regional security concern, saying, "This is a matter of peace, of international law, for Latin America and the Caribbean. Anyone who commits an act of aggression against a country in Latin America is attacking all countries."

Earlier in the month, U.S. President Donald Trump had directed the Pentagon to evaluate military responses to combat drug cartels operating in Latin America.

In a related move, Washington raised the bounty for Maduro's capture to $50 million due to allegations of narcotics trafficking.

In retaliation, Maduro declared the activation of 4.5 million personnel from Venezuela's national militia and acknowledged neighboring allies for backing his administration in the face of what he called a “rotten rehash” of previous U.S. threats.

“We defend our seas, our skies, and our lands. We liberate them. We police and patrol them. No empire will touch the sacred soil of Venezuela, nor should it touch the sacred soil of South America,” Maduro proclaimed.
