(MENAFN) Democrats claimed decisive victories in four major U.S. contests on Tuesday, signaling early momentum ahead of the 2026 midterms. The party captured the New York City mayoral race, gubernatorial contests in New Jersey and Virginia, and California’s Proposition 50 on redistricting, marking their first major electoral successes since President Donald Trump began his second term this January.
Mamdani Makes History as NYC’s First Muslim Mayor
Zohran Mamdani secured the New York City mayoralty, becoming the city’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor, according to a projection by The Associated Press.
At 34, Mamdani defeated independent candidate and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, along with Republican Curtis Sliwa, in a landmark victory for the Democratic Party’s progressive wing. With 91% of precincts reporting, Mamdani held more than 50% of the vote in the three-way race.
Speaking to supporters at Brooklyn’s Paramount Theater, Mamdani said, "We will usher in a generation of change, and if we embrace this brave new course, rather than fleeing from it, we can respond to oligarchy and authoritarianism with the strength it fears, not the appeasement it craves. After all, if anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him."
He continued, "If there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power. This is not only how we stop Trump, it's how we stop the next one. So Donald Trump, since I know you're watching, I have four words for you: 'Turn the volume up,'" eliciting a roar from the crowd.
Mamdani emphasized his commitment to fostering unity in New York, pledging to "refuse to allow those who traffic in division and hate to pit us against one another."
He added, "We will build a City Hall that stands steadfast alongside Jewish New Yorkers, and does not waver in the fight against the scourge of anti-Semitism, where the more than 1 million Muslims know that they belong, not just in the five boroughs of this city, but in the halls of power. No more will New York be a city where you can traffic in Islamophobia and win an election."
