Trump’s nuclear weapon testing will deepen global crisis— IAEA chief
Speaking in an interview with a French broadcaster, Grossi characterized Trump’s announcement as a “manifestation of profound unease, tension, and increasing fragmentation,” warning that it undermines both global stability and the international framework designed to prevent nuclear proliferation.
Trump last week directed the US Department of War to begin preparations for renewed nuclear tests, asserting that the United States is “the only country that doesn’t test” and accusing Russia and China of carrying out “secret” nuclear explosions. Both nations have publicly rejected those claims.
Grossi questioned the accuracy of the US president’s allegations, noting that any such detonations would be detected by the global monitoring network established under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). He stressed that the agency tasked with verification “can immediately record such phenomena.”
The IAEA chief urged the United Nations to reassert its authority in safeguarding global peace and reinforcing the nuclear non-proliferation regime amid mounting geopolitical divisions.
Meanwhile, Kremlin officials said Moscow is withholding comment on Trump’s statements until receiving “clarifications from the American side.” They reaffirmed that neither Russia nor China had resumed nuclear tests and remain committed to the CTBT.
Trump’s announcement followed recent Russian weapons trials, including launches of the Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile and the Poseidon underwater drone, none of which involved nuclear detonations. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously stated that Moscow would only consider resuming tests if other nuclear powers formally end the testing moratorium.
