Progressive Democratic nominee Mamdani gets elected as NYC mayor
(MENAFN) Progressive Democrat Zohran Mamdani is projected to become the next mayor of New York City, according to major networks, with more than 90% of votes tallied. The 33-year-old Uganda-born assembly member leads former governor and independent candidate Andrew Cuomo by roughly 50% to 41%, while Republican Curtis Sliwa trails at just over 7%.
Tuesday’s election saw historic participation, with over two million residents casting ballots—the highest turnout for a New York mayoral race since 1969, as reported by city election officials.
Mamdani’s candidacy has sparked debate across the political spectrum. His progressive platform, emphasizing housing affordability and wealth taxation, has energized younger and left-leaning voters. At the same time, moderates and Republicans have criticized his socialist policies, with some branding him a “communist.”
In a highly unusual move, President Donald Trump endorsed Cuomo and warned of potential federal funding restrictions if Mamdani wins. “If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the election for mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing federal funds … other than the very minimum as required,” Trump said just before the vote.
Cuomo conceded late Tuesday, acknowledging Mamdani’s projected victory while urging oversight of the incoming administration. “Almost half of New Yorkers did not vote to support a government agenda that makes promises that we know cannot be met. This campaign as an independent after losing the Democratic primary was necessary to make that point – a caution flag that we are heading down a dangerous, dangerous road,” Cuomo stated.
Mamdani’s election marks a significant win for New York’s progressive wing and positions him as a youthful, bold voice in city politics.
