Ursula von der Leyen affirms EU’s stand with Ukraine ahead of winter
"Good call with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Dear President, Ukraine will not face this winter alone," von der Leyen stated on social media. She emphasized that the EU is providing emergency energy assistance to help Ukraine navigate the challenging months ahead.
"At the same time, we are working on options to ensure the necessary sustained financial assistance to Ukraine," she added.
Von der Leyen also highlighted the European Commission’s upcoming Enlargement Package, praising Ukraine’s “remarkable commitment to its European path over the past year” and signaling that “The Commission's message is clear: Ukraine is ready to move forward.”
Ukraine submitted its EU membership application in February 2022, gained candidate status in June 2022, began accession talks in December 2023, and held its first intergovernmental conference in June 2024. Discussions among EU member states over the pace and conditions of Ukraine’s accession continue, with countries such as Slovakia and Hungary raising concerns.
