Demonstrators halt launch of Nigerian museum
The unrest reportedly stems from local discontent over the museum not being named the Benin Royal Museum and not falling under the authority of the Oba, the region’s traditional ruler. Originally intended in part as a home for the Benin Bronzes—artifacts taken by British forces in the 19th century—the museum currently does not house the pieces due to ownership disputes.
A spokesperson for Mowaa clarified that the institution has never claimed the Benin Bronzes and is focused on showcasing modern and contemporary art alongside historical collections from Nigeria and West Africa. All guests were safely escorted from the site.
"We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this situation may have caused," the museum said in a statement, adding that no new opening date has been set.
Residents and local officials reportedly view the museum as having been taken over from its original local vision. A representative noted that the museum’s name originally included “Edo” but was removed to broaden its focus beyond Nigeria. The institution emphasized its independent, non-profit status and said that a former state governor who supported the project holds no financial interest.
All preview events have been cancelled, and visitors have been advised to stay away until tensions subside. The museum expressed gratitude to attendees for their understanding, patience, and resilience.
