Kenya Addresses Citizens Recruited to Fight for Russia
“Reports suggest that over two hundred Kenyans may have joined the Russian military, with some being former members of Kenya’s disciplined services,” stated Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi in a declaration published on the Foreign Ministry’s official website.
According to Ukraine, more than 1,400 individuals from around thirty African nations are engaged in combat alongside Russian troops in Ukraine, with several allegedly recruited through deceitful means.
Describing the situation as deeply concerning, Mudavadi encouraged Kenyan citizens to remain vigilant and skeptical of overseas employment offers that seem excessively appealing or unrealistic.
The previous week, Kenyan President William Ruto held a phone discussion with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during which he appealed for the release of Kenyans who have been captured in the conflict area.
In a separate statement from South Africa’s Presidency dated November 6, it was revealed that diplomatic efforts are ongoing to repatriate 17 South African nationals who were lured into becoming mercenaries with promises of lucrative pay and are now stranded on the battlefield within Ukraine’s Donbas region.
