China Calls on US to Scrap Trump-Era Tariffs After Supreme Court Ruling

(MENAFN) China has urged the United States to remove the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump after a US Supreme Court ruling invalidated most of the measures, according to reports.

Trump had levied tariffs on numerous trading partners last year, citing unfair trade practices.

Most goods faced a standard 10% tariff, with higher rates for countries with large trade imbalances. Last week, however, the Supreme Court determined that Trump lacked authority under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), effectively nullifying most of the tariffs.

In a statement on Monday, the Chinese Commerce Ministry called on Washington to lift the tariffs, arguing that they now breach even US domestic law. “China has consistently opposed all forms of unilateral tariff increases and has repeatedly emphasized that there are no winners in a trade war,” the ministry said. “The US’s unilateral measures… violate both international trade rules and US domestic law. China urges the US to cancel its unilateral tariff measures.”

US-China relations have been tense for years over economic and technological disputes, with Trump’s tariff hikes last year sparking a full-scale trade war. At its peak, US tariffs on Chinese goods reached 145%, while Chinese tariffs on US goods hit 125%. In November, both sides agreed to a one-year pause in retaliatory measures, reducing some tariffs to around 10%.
