South Korean Navy Chief Gets Suspended Over Failed Martial Law Plot
The Defense Ministry made the decision following a committee meeting held on Friday to review potential disciplinary measures against Kang after revelations emerged that he assisted in establishing the martial law command on the night of Dec. 3, 2024, as stated by reports.
Kang had already been relieved from his duties last month in connection with these allegations.
During the period when martial law was briefly declared, he was serving as chief of the directorate of military support at the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Authorities earlier noted that a six-month inquiry examined roughly 860 generals and field-grade officers across 24 military commands and units, pinpointing about 180 individuals suspected of having either direct or indirect involvement in the attempt. The ministry also concluded that roughly 1,580 troops were mobilized during the short-lived martial law period.
