Israeli Soldiers Detained in Military Base Weapons Thefts

(MENAFN) Israeli authorities have detained multiple suspects, among them two active-duty soldiers, in connection with a series of weapons thefts from Israeli army bases, Hebrew-language media reported Saturday — the latest in a troubling pattern of security failures inside the military.

Israeli media reported that the arrests are tied to no fewer than four distinct theft incidents recorded over the past several weeks. While the broadcaster confirmed multiple detentions, the precise number of suspects taken into custody has not been officially disclosed.

According to the report, the pilfered weapons were transferred from military installations to unidentified recipients operating within Israel — raising urgent questions about the chain of custody and internal oversight at affected bases.

The Israeli army has grappled for years with recurring cases of weapons and ammunition disappearing from within its own facilities, involving both uniformed soldiers and civilian suspects. The problem shows little sign of abating.

As far back as last April, Hebrew media flagged that military officials were struggling to contain a growing and organized theft network operating in and around bases, including those positioned near the Gaza Strip.

Reporting at the time revealed that a significant volume of stolen arms had filtered into the hands of "criminal groups" inside Israel, prompting law enforcement to mount repeated crackdown operations — including targeted raids and large-scale weapons seizures — in an effort to claw back the illicitly obtained military hardware.
