Zelenskyy, EU Council Chief Discuss Ukraine’s Path Toward EU Membership

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday that he held a phone conversation with European Council President Antonio Costa focused on continued cooperation regarding Ukraine’s integration into the European Union.

In a statement shared on the social media platform X, Zelenskyy thanked Costa for extending Europe Day greetings to Ukraine and its citizens, while also expressing appreciation for European support during the ongoing conflict with Russia.

“We will defend our independence and our people’s right to freely choose their path. And in doing so, we will also defend the right of all European peoples to live as they themselves wish. Russia will not succeed in breaking Europe or fracturing it -- there have been many attempts, but all have failed. And none will succeed,” Zelenskyy said.

The Ukrainian leader noted that the discussions also covered future coordination related to Ukraine’s accession process to the European Union.

Expressing that he and Costa discussed joint work on Ukraine’s further European integration, Zelenskyy said Ukraine will “take its place as a full member of the European Union.”

“We are preparing for the opening of clusters and further decisions,” Zelenskyy said, adding that they also discussed recent steps in diplomacy and their agreement with Russia to carry out a 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner swap mediated by the US.

Europe Day marks the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, introduced on May 9, 1950, by former French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman. The proposal promoted the establishment of a European Coal and Steel Community to strengthen cooperation and help prevent future wars in postwar Europe.

The declaration is widely considered the first formal step toward the creation of the European Union, which today consists of 27 member states, operates a unified market system, uses the euro currency in 21 countries, and maintains open-border cooperation through the Schengen framework.
